Health

Why Health?

There are two main reasons to focus on health. First, a large share of deaths in developing countries are attributed to diseases that are either preventable or treatable. For instance, the CDC estimates that 2,195 children die everyday due to diarrhea. Malaria has a similar impact, killing 460,000 children in Africa before their 5th birthday. Typhoid kills 200,000 people every year and 122,000 deaths are associated with Measles. Each of these diseases listed are preventable (in some cases completely through the use of vaccines) or treatable.

Beyond the morbidity and mortality costs of poor health, the second reason we focus on health is that it has a large negative effect on the economy. In particular, poor health inflicts costs on productivity, investment, and society.

Education

Why Education?

While our focus on Health tries to improve the present, our focus on education looks to the future. As the world becomes more and more globalized it is important that developing countries increase their educational attainment in order to fully integrate. Our goal is to provide a high quality primary school education that will prepare students to excel at all levels of schooling. We believe that providing high quality primary school education is a low hanging fruit in the fight against poverty.
